Explanation of terms

Many terms can be used to describe floatation equipment … floatation tank, flotation tank, float tank, isolation tank, sensory deprivation tank, floating tank, Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy (or Technique), REST, floatation REST, flotation REST, think tank, Pathfinder tank.

Europeans tend to use the term “floatation tank”, whereas Americans tend to use the term “flotation tank”. “Float tank” is a term used internationally. The terms “isolation tank” and “sensory deprivation tank” are seldom used nowadays. The term “floating tank” is sometimes used by people whose first language is not English.

Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy and its acronym REST are terms developed by researchers to describe the process that underlies floatation (restricting or eliminating external stimulation to the neuromuscular system). The terms floatation REST or floatation REST are widely used by people with a scientific or professional interest in floatation.

Think Tank is, of course the name of our company. The Pathfinder floatation tank is the name of our product. However, some people refer to Pathfinder tanks as "think tanks", and use the term generically to describe floatation equipment.
